Rebekah Farrugia holds a PhD from the University of Iowa and is Professor of Communication at Oakland University. She is a media studies scholar whose work explores the relationship between gender, identity, community, and cultural production in popular music genres such as electronic dance music and hip hop.

Her co-authored monograph Women Rapping Revolution: Hip Hop and Community Building in Detroit (University of California Press) explores the contributions of women to the intersecting hip hop and cultural organization movements in the city.

Her previous book Beyond the Dance Floor: Female DJs, Technology, and Electronic Dance Music examines the gendering of dance music culture, issues of representation, and the community building practices of women DJs and producers in the early 2000s.

She is currently working on a new project about non-profit arts organizations in Detroit and their relationship to the local music economy.
